Both switch and router will connect multiple computers and allow high speed file sharing with each other. Routers are network endpoints while switches are not. Most Routers have WiFi while switches do not.

Switch

1. A Switch is a telecommunication device which receives a message from any device connected to it and then transmits the message to the particular device for which the message was meant.
2. Switching involves moving packets between devices on the same network.
3. It cannot be used to connect to internet.
4. Switch’s creates network.
5. Switches operates at ISO layer 2 - data link layer

Router

1. A Router is a telecommunication device which receives a message from any device connected to it and then transmits the message over the internet.
2. Routers are used to connect to the internet.
3. Most routers has WIFI, so you need to have routers to connect all your devices like Smartphone,
4. Routers operate at ISO layer 3 - network layer

So if you are looking to connect your devices (PC, Smartphone, laptop etc) to internet, you need to use a router.
